Giving My Girls Some Love

I will always love the music of Michael Jackson, and enjoy listening and dancing to all his great hits with my boys.

With his recent passing, it has made me stop to appreciate all the great music icons of my time.  I realize it’s just as important to love and appreciate them while they are here. I’m sure MJ would have loved to see and feel all the respect and admiration that is being voiced now.

So, here are my top 3 greatest musical influences:

Janet Jackson: Wow, there would be no Britney, JLo, Rihanna, or Ciara without Janet. She was one of the first female entertainers to really throw it down on the dance floor. And Janet has a lot of classics that I still listen to today that take me to a whole nother planet. There is no song sexier than Anytime, Anyplace. One of my top 5 dance tunes is Pleasure Principle. Man, every girl was walking around with tight black jeans, a cut off, and a blowout after this video. I could go on and on with my Janet classics, but here’s a few more: I Get Lonely, Love Will Never Do, Again, Nasty Boys, Control, Scream, You Want This…..someone stop me. Dang, Janet is the bomb!!!!

Whitney Houston: One of the greatest singers of our time. What little girl has never stood in front of the mirror singing, How Will I Know? I remember her as one of the first artists of my time to cross racial lines. EVERYONE loved Whitney. Saving All My Love, Greatest Love of All (I’m sure my mom will remind everyone how I sang that song at the 4-H talent show), All At Once, Didn’t We Almost Have It AllYou Give Good Love, Heartbreak Hotel. Of course, my favorite Whitney moments come from The Bodyguard Soundtrack, I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You. I still throw a pillow at the tv every time someone on American Idol tries to sing it. That’s just the dumbest thing ever. You cannot duplicate Whitney, people! She is original greatness.

MARIAH CAREY!: Oh lordy, Where do I begin? I could probably write a blog entry daily for 6 months about a Mariah song and what it means to me. I have LOVED Mariah since I first heard Vision of Love. Mariah was one of the first pop singers to do a collaboration with a rap artist (Fantasy w/ODB). Her music and voice has inspired so many singers. How can I possibly name my favorites? Of course, I love all her #1 hits (all 18 of them). But some of my favorites are the ones that were never released: Yours, Melt Away, Babydoll, The Beautiful Ones, Fourth of July, All I’ve Ever Wanted, and everything on Glitter (for the record, the soundtrack and movie are both AMAZING). Lead the Way and Never Too Far are both beautiful. I could go on and on about how fabulous Mariah is. We are BFF’s (in my mind). I remember when I was in high school, I told a friend’s younger sibling (a 6 year old-they believe everything) that Mariah was my sister (sorry Mona, you just can’t sing like that). The kid believed me, but started questioning me when she turned 10. But still, Mariah and I are “soul” sisters.

So, there you have it, my favorite 3 living musical talents. Janet, Whitney, and Mariah. I love them and hope they know how much their music inspires people, not just me.

BTW, everyone has a right to their opinion, but if you say ANYTHING negative about my girls, I will hunt you down, and it won’t be pretty.

So, who are your top 3???

Janet is definitely badass. Now, I’m humming a few of her tunes after reading this. Let’s see….I LOVED Madonna and The Dave Matthews Band.

I agree about honoring our living legends. I’m sure it would have meant so much to MJ to know how well he is appreciated. It’s so sad.
I agree with your list, but MUST add Celine Dion and Madonna.
